Chapter 22

“Who the fuck is this?

Pagin’ me at 5:46 in the mornin’, crack of dawnin’,

now I’m yawnin’. Wipe the cold out my eye,

Told me he was in the gamblin’ spot and heard the intricate plot.

Ju’feer was feeling fresh after getting his cut at the barbershop he and Heem had opened up on State street.

“Ayo, rude boy! Come get that ass spanked and pockets shrunk!” a dude called out from a crowd across the street, huddled and blackjacking.

Ju’feer’s pockets were fat already, but he never turned down the opportunity to fatten them up a little more. He made his way across the street and took a spot in the game. “All di shit you talk! Watch how mi scrape you. Hit me!” he said to the dealer.

The guys were busy jacking and talking shit, but Ju’feer noticed a delivery truck parking on the corner. A man hopped out with a box. ‘Feer had ordered a new iPhone and had requested it be sent to the shop. He’d heard a lot of good things about the Apple product, and he couldn’t wait to use it. He was tired of the little cheap ass phone he had. He tried to catch the little Hispanic delivery guy before he took the phone into the shop, but he was in and out real quick. “Ayo, mi come back. I just need to grab mi new phone,” he said as he got up and made his way toward the shop.

He was crossing the street when a loud explosion went off, and the force threw him back. The heat from the fire danced all around him. He watched in horror as his barbershop went up in flames before him. The smoke burned his eyes, but he could still make out the short Hispanic man hopping into the delivery truck and screeching away. Ju’feer quickly ran to his Beamer, hopped in, and followed. He weaved in and out of traffic to catch up with the truck, but he stayed three cars behind the truck to safely watch where it was going. He followed as the truck went toward East Main Street, turned, and finally stopped in an empty lot on Hicks Street, where another car was parked.

Ju’feer parked on the street so his car would be hidden by the vacant building. He watched the driver hop out at the same time as another man got out of a second car. ‘Feer put the silencer on his .22, crept along the side of the building and then quickly ran toward the men.

The short delivery man was the only one who could see him running toward them because the second man’s back was to him but the look of surprise in the man’s eyes alerted the man he was speaking to.

‘Feer shot him in the head before he could say anything, then pointed the gun at the other guy’s head, who was attempting to reach for something tucked in his waist.
